Guy Macdonald, B.Sc.
President and Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Macdonald has served as Tetraphase’s President and CEO since January 2008. He has enjoyed a successful 25-year career in global pharmaceutical and biotechnology. Prior to joining Tetraphase, he was Executive Vice President, Operations, Idenix Pharmaceuticals where he played the lead role in developing the commercial organization in the U.S. and top five EU countries and was responsible for Regulatory Affairs, Quality Assurance, Manufacturing, Information Technology and Project Management.
Mr. Macdonald previously spent 22 years at Merck & Co., Inc., initially in the UK, followed by senior positions in the U.S., culminating as the Vice President for Anti-infective and Hospital Products with sales of more than $1.4 billion. At Merck, Mr. Macdonald had a distinguished career as a senior leader in the areas of virology and anti-infectives, which included a number of landmark product launches at a global level.
Mr. Macdonald received an Honours Degree in Biochemistry from Dundee University, Dundee, Scotland.

Patrick Horn, M.D., Ph.D.
Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Horn joined Tetraphase in early 2011. Previously, he served as Vice President, Clinical & Medical Affairs at Dyax Corporation, where he worked from 2006 until 2010. At Dyax, he was responsible for building the Medical Affairs Organization to support Kalbitor® (ecallantide) as well as for medical communication with the U.S. Food & Drug Administration during the drug’s regulatory review process. Prior to Dyax, he held positions of increasing responsibility at Abbott Laboratories from 2001 until 2006, culminating with his role as Medical Director, Director (Head) of Clinical Pharmacology. Earlier, Dr. Horn was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Chicago from 1994 until 2001.
Dr. Horn received his medical degree from the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine, his doctorate from the University of Chicago, and his bachelor of science from the University of Illinois.

David Lubner
Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer
Mr. Lubner has been with Tetraphase since inception (September 2006) and serves as Senior Vice President and CFO. He has extensive experience in finance and operations at start-up and development stage health care/life sciences companies. Prior to joining Tetraphase, he served as Vice President and CFO at PharMetrics, Inc., a leading provider of patient-based market intelligence solutions using pharmacy and medical claims data, as a member of the leadership team growing the business from its embryonic stage to the company’s successful acquisition by IMS Health (NYSE:Rx) in 2005. Previously he was CFO at ProScript, Inc., a biotechnology company, and a controller at Immulogic Pharmaceutical Corporation.
Mr. Lubner received a B.S. in Business Administration from Northeastern University and an M.S. in Taxation from Bentley College. He is also a C.P.A.

Magnus Ronn, Ph.D.
Vice President, Pharmaceutical Sciences
Dr. Ronn joined Tetraphase in November 2006, and presently serves as Vice President, Pharmaceutical Sciences. Prior to joining Tetraphase, he was a Senior Scientist within Process Chemistry R&D at Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (now a Takeda company). During his tenure at Millennium, he led several projects in the process chemistry group as well as CMC projects in pre-clinical and early clinical development, including non-GMP and cGMP drug substance manufacturing. Before Millennium, Dr. Ronn was a scientist at Roche Colorado Corporation where he was involved in the process development of Fuzeon® and Orlistat as well as pilot plant manufacturing.
Dr. Ronn conducted his post-doctoral research in Organic Synthesis at University of Colorado, Boulder under the supervision of Professor Gary A. Molander. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Uppsala, Sweden under the supervision of Professor Jan-E Backvall.

Joyce Sutcliffe, Ph.D.
Senior Vice President, Biology
Dr. Sutcliffe is Senior Vice President, Biology. She has more than 25 years of experience in antibiotic research and development. Prior to joining Tetraphase, she was Vice President, Research, NanoBio Corporation where she led antimicrobial, antiviral and antifungal discovery activities. In addition, she was Chief Research Scientist for six years at Rib-X Pharmaceuticals and previously spent 16 years at Pfizer where she played key roles in early-stage antibiotic discovery and development through Phase 2 activities.
Dr. Sutcliffe received her Ph.D. in Microbiology from the University of Florida, Gainesville, followed by postdoctoral positions at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Her expertise is antimicrobial resistance mechanisms: The challenge and the driver for new antibiotics.

Leland Webster, Ph.D.
Vice President, Business Development
Dr. Webster has served as Vice President, Business Development since January 2009. Prior to joining Tetraphase, he was Vice President, Corporate Development at Surface Logix, Inc., where he was responsible for corporate partnering and M&A. Prior to this, he held positions of increasing responsibility in business development (in-licensing and out-licensing) at ImmunoGen and Vertex Pharmaceuticals, where he concluded a number of important strategic alliance deals. Dr. Webster began his career in the biotech industry at MPM Capital L.P., where he was a Senior Analyst.
Dr. Webster received his B.A. in Biological Sciences from Northwestern University and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Pennsylvania. He previously served as Damon Runyon-Walker Winchell postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology at the Harvard Medical School. Dr. Webster also holds an M.B.A. from the MIT Sloan School of Management.

Xiao-Yi Xiao, Ph.D.
Vice President, Medicinal Chemistry
Dr. Xiao has served as Vice President, Medicinal Chemistry since the inception of Tetraphase in September 2006. Prior to joining Tetraphase, he was Senior Director of Discovery Chemistry at Miikana Therapeutics/EntreMed and Syrrx/Takeda, where he was responsible for the discovery, and participated in the in-licensing of, a number of clinical and pre-clinical small molecule anti-cancer and diabetes candidates. Dr. Xiao also held a number of positions with increasing responsibility at Affymax Research Institute and IRORI/Discovery Partners (DPI), where his research interests focused on the development and application of novel synthetic technologies in lead discovery and lead optimization.
Dr. Xiao received his bachelor of science in chemistry from Zhongshan University, China, and his Ph.D. in organic and bio-organic chemistry from State University of New York Stony Brook with Professor Glenn D. Prestwich. He conducted his post-doctoral training in total synthesis of natural products (Brevetoxins) at the Scripps Research Institute under the direction of Professor K.C. Nicolaou. Dr. Xiao has published more than 40 research articles and book chapters as well as over 20 issued patents and patent applications.
